Free Algebra Tiles

Algebra tiles are extremely useful, particularly in teaching students to multiply binomials.  Of course, you could teach the students to FOIL, but we want to teach math with manipulatives.

The pictures we will be using in the illustrations come from our free hand-made tiles.  Please download or print them if you like.

Take a look at a board and how it is used...

Example:  Multiply (x + 2)(x + 3)

To illustrate this example using tiles, fill in the binomials in the correct positions like it is shown below.

Now you simply fill in the center.  As a teacher, you already know that... x·x = x2, x·1 = x, and 1·1 = 1.  By simply filling in the correct pieces of the rectangle, the students will see and feel these results.  Take a look:

See how the rectangle in the center was completed?  You are simply matching up the columns and the rows (like the math times table).  Now you just add up the center:  x2 + 5x + 6.  Easy, right?
