Free Algebra Tiles
Algebra tiles are extremely useful, particularly in teaching students to
multiply binomials. Of course, you could teach the students to FOIL, but
we want to teach math with manipulatives.
The pictures we will be using in the illustrations come from our free
hand-made tiles. Please
download or print them if you like.
Take a look at a board and how it is used...

Example: Multiply (x + 2)(x + 3)
To illustrate this example using tiles, fill in the binomials in the
correct positions like it is shown below.

Now you simply fill in the center. As a teacher, you already know
that... x·x = x2,
x·1 = x, and 1·1 = 1. By simply filling in the correct
pieces of the rectangle, the students will see and feel these results.
Take a look:

See how the rectangle in the center was completed? You are simply matching
up the columns and the rows (like the
math times table).
Now you just add up the center: x2 + 5x + 6.
